Home Checks & Adoptions

Home Checks & Adoptions

Prior to adoption, members MUST conduct thorough physical home checks to ensure the prospective home is suitable for the animal. If the prospective home is outside of an area of reasonable travel for the member, then assistance must be sought from a DAWN Member, another reputable organisation or individual person experienced in conducting home checks for the member.

Objective: Ensure permanent, safe, and enriching placements for rescued animals.

  • All adoptions MUST be preceded by a formal application and interview.
  • Home checks MUST evaluate:
    • Physical safety, fencing, and security
    • Household dynamics and lifestyle
    • Compatibility with existing animals
  • Specific protocols:
    • Dogs & Cats: Require full vetting, sterilisation, and behavior disclosure.
    • Small Animals & Birds: Require appropriate indoor housing and social conditions.
    • Reptiles & Wildlife: Adoptions to private homes only under legal licensing.
  • Return policies MUST be explicit in contracts and communicated clearly.
